What the IRS says to do

Read your notice carefully. Make sure the name and date of birth we have on record for you is right. Use your ITIN to file federal tax returns or tax reporting documents. Alert us if you receive a Social Security number (SSN) in the future and begin using the SSN in place of the ITIN when filing federal tax returns or tax reporting documents. It’s not necessary for you to respond to the notice, so no further action is required.

This is the IRS’s own guidance reproduced from the IRS notice page. It describes the IRS’s process — it is not legal or tax advice from TaxRiskOS.
