What the IRS says to do

File your required exempt organization return immediately to limit any late filing penalties. If you file your exempt organization return after the due date of the return (including any extensions), the return is considered late and subject to late filing penalties. Exempt organizations must file Form 990 series returns electronically. The IRS will not accept Form 990 series returns filed on paper. See E-file for Charities and Non-Profits .
